Cairo
stadium was host to yet another high-quality soccer contest as top
European team Aiax Amsterdam beat Egypt's Ahly 2-1 in an international
friendly.
The match between Aiax Amsterdam,
one of Europe's top soccer clubs, and Ahly, one of Egypt's top teams,
began at Cairo Stadium at 2:45 in the afternoon. The Cairo weather was
in full cooperation -- not too cold, and nice and sunny.

The stadium was relatively
packed. Local fans had gotten used to being privy to Ahly matches with
top international players. The boys in red had previously played AC Roma
and Real Madrid in Cairo, soundly trouncing the famous Spanish club
despite its bevy of international stars.

This match-up was especially
interesting because Mido, the star Egyptian soccer export, who plays fro
Aiax Amsterdam, had been quoted in the papers saying he looked forward
to competing against home team Ahly. In fact, Mido scored Aiax's second
goal, an unexpected shot in the middle of the second half.

The idea of a local player who
had done well for himself abroad coming back to compete against his
countrymen was certainly interesting, and made for plenty of fodder at
coffeehouses and wherever people were gathered watching the match. Mido
has been very high profile in town over the last few months, being the
rather prolific spokesman for Vodaphone's "Call me on the Vodaphone"
Arabic ads.

The first half ended with Aiax in
the lead 1-0, and Ahly managed to get a goal almost immediately after
Mido scored his.
Overall, a decent show.
