(cairolive.com,
June 7, 2002) Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak is currently in Washington for a series of high-level
meetings with the Bush administration, members of Congress, and both
Arab and Jewish lobby groups. The focus of the trip is jump-starting
the moribund Arab-Israeli peace process.
A brief
look at the president's schedule:
On Thursday
Mubarak met with members of the US Senate and House of
Representatives, followed by meetings with representatives from the
most prominent American Muslim and Arab organizations. This latter
meeting is symbolic of the Egyptian government's acknowledgement of
these group's efforts towards influencing the American political
spectrum, with the hope of giving the groups themselves a push
towards becoming an even stronger force in lobbying Congress for
both Muslim and Arab causes in the US.
Mubarak
will also be having a lunch meeting with Vice President Dick
Chaney at his residence, the Blair House. He
will then have a quick meeting with five editors, including the
editor-in-chief, from the Los
Angeles Times.
On Friday,
Mubarak is scheduled to appear not once, but twice, on CNN. The
first interview is with Paula Zahn in the morning, and the second
with Jonathan Mann, for the program Insight, in the evening.
He will
then meet with Secretary of State Colin Powell later on that day.
The president also has a meeting with Bush's National Security
Advisor Condaleeza Rice.
Amongst
his other media appearances, Mubarak will be interviewed by a group
of reporters and editors from The Washington Post, headed by the editor-in-chief and owner of the
paper, who specifically requested, reports Al-Ahram, to be at the
meeting in person.
He will
then meet with representatives from a few prominent American Jewish
organizations.
Finally,
Mubarak will proceed to Camp David, where he will begin talks with American
President George W Bush over dinner on Friday.
The two leaders will complete their talks on Saturday
morning, and are expected to conduct a joint press conference in
which they will announce the results of their discussions.
Speculation
is rife that an Egyptian-American peace proposal is in the works,
but few details have emerged to confirm it.
