Imam back in town
Soccer star Hazem Imam is being "borrowed" from the Italian club team he currently plays for to play for the Zamalek team from March till August. Imam may even be back in town soon enough to play in Zamalek's big game with Ahli next Friday. The on-going Ahli-Zamalek rivalry will round up this season's clubs league, with Zamalek currently in the lead and Ahli trailing by about 4 points.
Tough tie makes Cup bid no easier
In an important soccer match on Saturday, Egypt tied Namibia thanks to a last-minute goal by Ibrahim Said. The 1-1 result still makes it difficult for the team to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. The current standings in Group C are as follows: Morocco (1-0-3) six points; Algeria (1-1-1) four points; Egypt and Senegal (both 0-0-3) three points each; and Namibia (0-1-2) two points.

The city of Luxor and the Environment Ministry have announced the establishment of an annual award to the project that best aims to protect the environment. Named after the internationally renowned pharaoh, the Tutankhamun prize will be handed out every year on the city's national day on November 4, which marks the anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in the early part of the last century.
Circus debates
It took a document proving that the circus has existed in Egypt for nearly 7000 years to convince delegates at an international circus conference held recently in Paris, France, that Egypt should host next year's international round. According to Al-Wafd, when the Egyptian delegation representative, Ibrahim El-Helw, first proposed that Egypt should host the event, the American representative objected, but later changed his mind when he was shown the documents ascertaining that the circus has existed in Egypt since pharaonic times.

Bedeir not happy with his name
One of the several films which will be competing for attention during next week's big eid holiday is a film about landmines starring Samir Sabry called Gaheem Taht El-Ard (Hell Underground). The stars of the film are also competing for billing rights on the film's billboards, and one of them, veteran actor Ahmed Bedeir, is not too happy about the way his name appears on the ads. Bedeir says he was promised by Sabry and the film's directors and producers that his name would be printed the same size as Sabry's, Kamal El-Shinnawi's and Raghda's, and was shocked to discover how small it ended up being. Al-Akhbar reports that Bedeir has told the producers to take his name off the ads altogether -- he'd rather not be there at all rather than be there so small.
