A private launch

Wednesday was the 18th annual Media Day, as industry leaders gathered at the 6 October Media Production City to celebrate their day with President Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak inaugurated several projects in the giant media city, including a power generator, 4 new private satellite channels, a new turbo internet system for the state information service site, a huge new studios building, and a stupendous 5-star hotel and conference center with a revolving chandelier . The Media City is sprucing itself up in anticipation of business opportunities from foreign and local film and TV producers. A high-profile marketing campaign has been receiving coverage in the press, as well as a documentary about the city made by an American company.

The city's assets include its nice combination of ready made studios, Cairo's talent pool, and the nearby Nilesat satellite station to beam things up. There are already plenty of takers, but the city could take on much more.

The four new private satellite channels that are set to appear in the next few months are:

• Tamima: The tele-sales advertising and marketing company now has its own channel

• Dream: Businessman Ahmed Bahgat's foray into the world of television.

• Egypt Tourist: A station dedicated to Egypt's tourism and history

• Mihwar: An attempt at offering viewers a privately run news channel
