It's summertime, and that means the young ones have a lot of free time on their hands. Now that Cairo has blossomed into a multi-amusement park city, there are plenty of places to take the kids for their fill of thrill rides and kiddie shows galore. Below are some of the available options.

Dream Park in 6 October City is probably the biggest of the lot, with nearly 40 major rides. An LE39 ticket allows you to ride as many times as you want, but the disappointing thing is that there is an additional charge of LE7 for three of the most exciting ones (the main roller coaster, the falling elevator, and the go-karts).

Geroland, at Obour City on the Cairo-Ismailiya highway, is said to be the closest thing to a Western amusement park, with a bigger dose of thrill rides, including a world-class triple loop roller coaster.

Sindbad City, near the airport, is the original park, still crowded with busloads of visitors nearly every night. It is smaller than the newer theme parks, and there is a separate ticket for every ride.

Magicland is the 6 October Media City's attempt to imitate the Universal Studios theme park in the US, complete with dinosaur-themed rides, and tours of the studios where TV series and movies are filmed.

Most Cairo malls also have both indoor and outdoor fun areas for children -- the most prominent being Geniena Mall and Wonderland in Nasr City, and Fun Planet at Arkadia Mall on the corniche downtown.

Alexandria now has a major amusement park as well, called Fantasy Land.
