Egyptian papers react: ... Afghanistan is burning
Take a first look at how the Arabic press is reacting to the war...

"Afghanistan is burning," reads the banner headline in opposition daily Al-Wafd on Monday. "A comprehensive US-UK missile and aerial attack on Afghani cities..."
Al-Akhbar says, "The war against Afghanistan has begun"
Al-Ahram suffices with a more generalized but blood red banner: "... And the war has begun"
Both on their front pages and inside, all the papers prominently cover the statements made by Osama bin Laden and his inner circle, which were broadcast by Qatari satellite channel Al-Jazeera immediately after the attacks began.
The papers all front the news that US President Bush spoke by phone to President Mubarak as the attacks began.
Meanwhile, a tiny item on Al-Ahram's front page indicates that Israel was told one hour before the attacks.
For now in Egypt, there are more questions than comments: What's to happen next? How long will the attacks go on? What shape will their ramifications take?
On an Egyptian TV morning program, a political commentator seems confident that the US will not be able to militarily occupy Afghanistan -- if that is their desire. China, Russia, and Iran would not allow that, the commentator says. They'll let the US strike for now -- with retaliating against terror as their international legitimacy -- but they won't be happy with a long-term US military presence in the region.

Who gave bin Laden the right to speak for Islam?
US and UK strike Afghanistan... This is not a war against the Afghan people or against Islam, Bush, Blair and Rumsfeld assure the world... Al-Jazeera broadcasts footage of bin Laden and his inner circle denouncing the US attack, and calling on all Muslims to defend themselves against US attacks.
